About Malta's Participation

Description

Malta, an archipelago situated at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, is renowned for
its dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden coves, and crystal-clear blue lagoons. Despite its
small size, Malta's coastline of approximately 253 km offers an extraordinary variety
of marine habitats, including Posidonia oceanica meadows, rocky shores, and sandy bays.

As one of the smallest EU member states, Malta has developed a strong commitment to
sustainable coastal tourism and marine conservation. The country actively engages in
regional partnerships to monitor coastal ecosystems and promote responsible tourism
practices across the Mediterranean.

Malta welcomes over 2.5 million tourists annually, with coastal and marine tourism
representing the primary driver of visitor activity. The Maltese islands — Malta, Gozo,
and Comino — offer world-class diving sites, historic harbours, and Blue Flag beaches.
Malta has established several marine protected areas under the EU Habitats Directive
and participates actively in the Barcelona Convention for the protection of the
Mediterranean Sea.
